ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, MISSOURI AND NATIONWIDE REFERENCE MESSAGE 964 DATED 4-9-79.

A NATIONWIDE BROADCAST BY THIS DEPARTMENT DESCRIBED A CONDITION IN WHICH OUR SMITH AND WESSON MODEL 66 REVOLVERS LOADED WITH REMINGTON R3557M1 AMMUNITION WERE MISFIRING. WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE REMINGTON AMMUNITION FACTORY LABORATORY PERSONNEL AND THE ENTIRE STAFF AT THE SMITH AND WESSON FACTORY, WE HAVE ISOLATED THE PROBLEM.

THE MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY AN ACCUMULATION OF THE LUBRICANT THAT THIS AGENCY IS USING IN THE INTERNAL PARTS OF THE WEAPON. EACH ADDITIONAL APPLICATION OF THE LUBRICANT WAS CAUSING A SUBSTANTIAL BUILDUP OF STICKY RESIDUE WHICH SLOWED THE HAMMER FALL TO THE DEGREE THAT THE PRIMERS WERE NOT HIT HARD ENOUGH TO FIRE. WE HAVE BEEN USING WD-40 BRAND LUBRICANT SINCE PURCHASE 10F THESE REVOLVERS IN 1977.
ALL OF THE REVOLVERS THAT MISFIRED HAD A HEAVY ACCUMULATION OF WD-40 ON THE WORKING PARTS OF THE ACTION.
